What is the United States Business Council for Sustainable Development?

Our mission is to demonstrate how sustainable development creates business value.

Launched in 2002, the US BCSD is a regional partner of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), a global network of 200 international companies with members from 35 countries and 20 major industrial sectors.  We show first-hand the benefits sustainable development can provide a company's triple bottom line - generating economic returns while improving the environment and society.

Your US BCSD Membership Benefits:

  • Provides the opportunity to participate in authentic sustainability projects with industry, government and other key stakeholders.
  • Offers meaningful business relationships with leaders from diverse industries to develop new working relationships and share the best ideas in sustainability.
  • Enhances members' credibility through groundbreaking projects and its partnerships with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.

Membership and Your Work Place:

  • Industry: The US Business Council for Sustainable Development has spent 12 years developing a formal process for sharing the best ideas and practices in sustainability with companies as disparate as Dow Chemical, Shell Oil and Lafarge.  The process will be key in finding fiscally smart ways to address future climate change legislation.
  • Government/Regulators: The US Business Council for Sustainable Development helps local governments bring stakeholders together to implement real projects that get environmental results, demonstrating in a tangible way that sustainable benefit, businesses and communities.  The Business Council is currently managing projects involving the cities of Chicago, Seattle, Kansas City, New Orleans and Mobile, AL.
  • Academia: The US Business Council for Sustainable Development works with academic to document data from the projects it implements to expand best practices across the country.  A recent example is the collaboration of the Business Council and a Massachusetts Institute of Technology researcher to publish a paper on byproduct synergy, or waste-to-profit networks, for the Clean Technology Conference 2008.
  • Non-Government Organizations (NGOs): The Business Council brings business leaders together with non-government organization to work on sustainability projects that otherwise might not have happened.  Example: reforestation of 100,000 acres of Lower Mississippi cropland - improving flood control, creating wildlife habitats and developing new income streams for landowners.  To make it happen, US BCSD is participating in a collaborative program sponsored by the McKnight Foundation to work with 32 other NGOs including American Land Conservancy, American Rivers, Ducks Unlimited and Environmental Defense.

Associate Membership

The US BCSD has created a second tier for membership to include selected NGOs, Academia, and participants from our more recent By-product Synergy projects.  Please call our main office to find out more on this new opportunity.

Project and Platform Information Overview can be found here.

Collaboration and Business Relationship: The ability to work across industries gives members the power to forge meaningful relationships with government, nonprofit and corporate partners they would not regularly be able to access.  These connections help link global strategies to the U.S. operations level, sharing best practices and finding sustainable solutions that have a much broader impact and benefit than if executed by just one company.

  • CemStar: This patented process was created using steel slag from Chaparral Steel in a TXI cement kiln to create high-quality Portland cement.  Profits from both companies increased, while CemStar reduced energy requirements by 10 percent to 15 percent and decreased carbon dioxide emissions by more than 10 percent per ton of cement produced.

World Business Council for Sustainable Development: The WBCSD is a CEO-lead global organization that helps businesses make effective contributions to sustainable human progress through knowledge sharing and policy development.  US BCSD members can participate in these experiences with colleagues from around the world and share the results of activities and projects initiated by the US BCSD.

  • The WBCSD adopted the US BCSD Lower Mississippi River Valley reforestation project as a case study, for showcasing its success to an international audience.

Contact: Membership in the US BCSD is by invitation, but we encourage any company dedicated to sustainable development to contact us.
